WHAT DOES MUSIC MEAN?

Leonard Bernstein emphasizes that music is essentially about eliciting emotions and feelings rather than explicitly telling stories or using imagery in his perceptive examination of the meaning of music. He uses classical compositions as an example of this idea, showing how different notes, melodies, rhythms, and harmonies may evoke a wide range of feelings in the listener. He highlights that music's intrinsic beauty is in its capacity to move the soul through the language of notes and sounds, emphasizing that the meaning of music is found within the music itself and advising listeners to appreciate and understand it by losing themselves in the emotional experience it offers.

REGULATING LINES

The text emphasizes how humans constructed temples and shelters according to their requirements even in antiquity, demonstrating an early understanding of methodical planning. Le Corbusier, using abstract geometry and mathematical computations, presents "regulating lines" as essential to architectural planning. He contends that these lines originate from human measurements, highlighting the close relationship that exists in architectural design between methodical planning, mathematical accuracy, and the human body.In architecture, the design language involves geometrical shapes like squares, circles, axes, and angles.Le Corbusier contends that human instinct, which dates back thousands of years, is the source of great building. Examples such as the Capitol in Rome and Notre-Dame in Paris show the power of controlling geometry and lines, even when modern designs may appear strange. According to Corbusier, "Regulating lines bring satisfaction to understanding, and regulating is a choice." These geometric tools serve as the foundation for well-organized selections that relate to the human figure.
